Rawlson King emerged as the winner from a crowded field of candidates Monday night to replace Tobi Nussbaum as Rideau-Rockcliffe Ward councillor.
King, a three-year president of the Overbrook Community Association and a graduate of Carleton University, defeated 16 other contenders to win the Ward 13 byelection with 18.4 per cent of the more than 8,000 votes cast. Jamie Kwong, former executive director of the Vanier BIA, was the runner-up with 16.8 per cent of the vote, just 123 votes behind King.
King’s byelection platform focused on fairness and transparency in development processes, stricter rules on short-term rentals such as Airbnb, affordable housing quotas, public safety initiatives such as a city-wide handgun and assault weapons ban, a transit fare freeze and a plan to tackle climate change as a city.
