Ottawa firm receives up to $525,000 in federal funding

On the same day the federal Liberals were touting their innovation agenda at a downtown startup conference, an Ottawa tech company announced it has received up to $525,000 of federal funding.

The Hotel Communication Network which creates technology that helps hotel guests access information, services and entertainment through in-room tablets, received the money from the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario.

The money means HCN will be able to not only maintain 16 jobs at the company, but add another 20 full-time positions.

HCN chief executive Kevin Bidner said federal funding has played a key role in helping his company develop its technology.

“We are now rolling out the platform into major U.S. markets, expanding our sales, support and development teams, and creating a competitive advantage for this Ontario-based technology,” he said in a statement.

HCN said the funding will help it increase sales and marketing in the major American hotel markets of San Francisco, New Orleans, and Chicago.
