Building permits surge in June

Major renovation projects in the parliamentary precinct, upgrades to two high schools and work at two major shopping malls helped give the construction industry a boost in June, municipal records show.

The City of Ottawa issued $273.9 million worth of building permits in the month, an increase of 39 per cent over the $196.5 million worth of permits issued in June 2013. The city awarded a total of 872 permits in June, down slightly from 903 the year before.

Among the major projects to gain city approval in June were alterations to the West Block of Parliament Hill, a four-storey addition to a retail building at the Rideau Centre and the construction of new ceilings and washrooms at the St. Laurent Centre.
