The inspiration: “The Shepherds of Good Hope help so many people in need. We at CLV Group feel so fortunate to be a small part in helping such a great Ottawa community provider of essential services,” says Mike McGahan, president and CEO of CLV Group.
The Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation, alongside other local charities, was fortunate to receive $50,000 from the Mike McCann Charity Golf Tournament that took place at the Meadows Golf and Country Club last September.
The CLV and InterRent REIT team, under the leadership of Mike McGahan, organized the tournament, one of the biggest events in the city, and raised almost $1.4 million.
The roots of the event go back to 1998, when the first CLV Charity Golf Tournament took place and was named for Ron Kolbus, a long-time local politician who died following an accident on the ice at a charitable event. McCann, the driving force behind the tournament from the beginning, was determined to keep Kolbus’ legacy alive.
McCann owned marketing firm Velocity Media and had big dreams for the golf tourney. Over the years, the tournament hit the $3.2-million mark by 2017. Sadly, in 2019, McCann died following a courageous battle with cancer.
In the spirit of keeping McCann’s legacy alive, McGahan, president and CEO of CLV Group, knew he wanted to help local charities and remember his friend for his tireless work. Through the support of more than 200 sponsors and 360 golfers, last year’s event was a huge success.
“At Shepherds of Good Hope we are so grateful when philanthropists like Mike McGahan and CLV Group step up to support those who experience chronic homelessness in Ottawa. Mike and his team are genuine champions of hope and ambassadors of dignity, helping us house even more vulnerable people,” says David Gourlay, vice-president of philanthropy with the Shepherds of Good Hope Foundation.
The golf tournament also benefited the Boys and Girls Club of Ottawa, Youth Services Bureau, Ottawa Food Bank, the Snowsuit Fund, The Ottawa Hospital Foundation and many more.
“When the community comes together to raise monies for not only the Shepherds of Good Hope, but for so many other important charities, it inspires people working in the charitable sector to keep going every day to help our most vulnerable citizens. This type of collaboration is inspiring,” adds Gourlay.
