The man whose fingerprints are all over Shopify’s finances is turning the books over to an accounting veteran, as the Ottawa e-commerce giant announced a new chief financial officer to take over for Russ Jones on Monday.
Amy Shapero will take on the CFO role effective April 2. She comes to the firm from online wealth management firm Betterment, where she served in the top accounting role since 2016.
She’s previously worked as CFO for SaaS marketing firms and financial services companies, with roles at Ernst and Young, Standard & Poor’s and Goldman Sachs rounding out her resume.

“Amy brings extensive financial, operational, and strategic experience,” said Shopify CEO Tobi Lütke in a statement.
“This, combined with her deep knowledge of the technology industry and experience scaling high-growth companies, will be a huge asset to Shopify as we enter our next phase of growth.”
Shapero replaces the only CFO that Shopify has ever known in Jones, who first announced his retirement during the firm’s second-quarter earnings call last August. At that time, Lütke said Jones’ “fingerprints are on everything” at Shopify, as he guided the firm’s explosive growth from startup to public company.
“Russ was Shopify’s first CFO, and now he’s our first official retiree … We’re very grateful to Russ for his valuable contributions and wish him all the best as he begins his well-deserved retirement,” said Lütke.
Jones will remain on as a strategic advisor through the transition. He said in August that he planned to travel, read, play more golf and spend time with family.
Joining Shapero at Shopify is Jeff Weiser, who takes on the chief marketing officer role from Craig Miller, now the firm’s head of product. Weiser comes from the CMO position at Shutterstock, as well as previous roles at Yahoo! and MySpace.
