House and condo buyers in Canada’s capital are getting more home for their real estate dollar, a new survey has found.

Century 21 Canada recently found that the price per square foot of a detached Ottawa home is among the lowest in the country at $215. Condos are slightly higher at $347 per square foot.

That puts the city in the same league as Red Deer, Alta., and below North Calgary, the real estate firm says.

To put the number in context, the comparable figure for a detached home in West Vancouver is $1,210 per square foot, according to Century 21. It also found that condo buyers in downtown Toronto can expect to pay slightly less than $819 per square foot.

Local economic development officials are increasingly using Ottawa’s relative housing affordability when marketing the city to skilled workers from other Canadian urban centres.
