Genband to open Ottawa centre of excellence for Kandy platform

Genband will open a 70,000-square-foot centre of excellence in Ottawa next week, the Texas-based real-time communications software provider announced Thursday.

The centre will complement Genband’s existing Ottawa facility on Palladium Drive and will be focused on, the company’s platform that helps its users enrich their own applications with real-time contextual communications.

The new facility will be home to research and development, product management, security and tech support operations. The company said many of the new hires will be recent graduates from local post-secondary institutions.

The exact number of jobs to be created by the centre is not yet known, according to a company spokeswoman.

“The appetite for embedded real-time communications is only growing, fuelled by the Internet of Things and a recognition that contextual real-time communications are the best avenue towards value creation in today’s digital landscape,” Kandy founder and CEO Paul Pluschkell said in a statement. “The (centre) will enable us to further propel our development of these solutions, and Ottawa … allows us to draw on a tech-savvy talent pool while participating in a thriving ecosystem.”

Ottawa Mayor Jim Watson will be on hand to help open the new facility June 9.

“The Kandy Cloud Centre of Excellence will be a tremendous addition to our thriving tech landscape,” Mr. Watson said in a statement. “I am confident that Kandy will see many benefits derive from its Ottawa location and that it will have a positive impact on our city.”

Customers around the world use Kandy to connect over the cloud and deliver more human applications, according to the company’s senior vice-president of cloud products, Sacha Gera.

“Much of the intellectual property that supports Kandy was developed in Ottawa over the decades, so it’s fitting that Ottawa-based engineers will once again play a key role in transforming the communications world,” Mr. Gera said in a statement.
