An Ottawa company that provides aerial photographs and other resources used in environmental assessments has been sold to a southern Ontario firm.

LGI Copy Service Canada has been acquired by Toronto-based Environmental Risk Information Services (ERIS), the companies announced this week. Terms were not disclosed.

Founded in 2005, LGI helps clients conducting environmental assessments research land-use patterns to determine if a property might be contaminated with chemicals or other substances.

The 11-person firm has a catalogue of detailed aerial photographs from across the country dating back to the 1920s, giving customers a bird’s-eye view of the buildings that occupied specific sites to help detect whether they may have housed gas stations, industrial plants or other occupants with potentially harmful environmental consequences.

The company also has decades of city directories that contain a treasure trove of data about what businesses were located at specific addresses, providing more insight into what might lie in the soil beneath them, explained LGI founder and chief executive Adam Lantos.

‘New-age technology’

“You can probably figure out through the city directory why LeBreton Flats is so contaminated,” he said.

Lantos said he’s worked with ERIS on various projects and felt the company would be the right M&A partner as he sought to exit the business.

He added that joining forces with the Toronto firm, which provides environmental assessment data for projects around the world, will give his customers access to “new-age technology” his company didn’t have the wherewithal to offer.

“Over the years, the synergy just kind of came to life where it just made sense to combine the (companies),” he said. “For me, after 16 years, it was time for a new challenge.”
