Artificial-intelligence giant Cohere is opening an office in Ottawa, the company has announced.
The Toronto-based firm, which builds large language models and software tools for businesses, said the new office will be located near Lansdowne Park. It did not say when the new facility will be open.
Cohere already employs nearly 30 people in the National Capital Region in go-to-market, engineering, infrastructure, security and sovereign AI roles.
“Ottawa’s deep technical talent, strong research community, and long history of technology innovation make it a natural place for Cohere to grow,” the company said in a news release late last week, adding it expects to continue expanding its footprint in the region.
“Canada is home for Cohere,” CEO Aidan Gomez said in a statement. “It’s where we founded the company, where so much of our talent comes from, and where we want to keep building for the long term.
“Ottawa has an incredible technology community and a deep pool of technical talent. Establishing our first office in the city is an important step in investing in our team and building for the future.”
The announcement came just a few days after Cohere said it was releasing a new version of its North platform that would allow AI agents to carry out more complicated tasks such as financial analysis and coding.
Founded in 2019, Cohere has raised more than $1.5 billion from backers that include Nvidia and Salesforce Ventures. The firm, whose customers include Bell Canada and Dell, agreed earlier this year to merge with German AI company Aleph Alpha.
CNBC reported that Cohere, which now has offices in Montreal, New York City, San Francisco, London, Paris, and Seoul, had recurring revenues of more than US$240 million in 2025.
The firm’s decision to open an office in Ottawa builds on a connection to the region that began last spring, when Cohere obtained the naming rights to the city’s largest convention and meeting centre. The 200,000-square-foot facility on Uplands Drive, near the Ottawa Airport, was previously known as the EY Centre.
