Porter Airlines is introducing two new routes and increasing capacity on three others in Ottawa.

The company announced on Wednesday its plans for a “significant expansion” for the upcoming winter season, which overall will include four new routes and a 25 per cent increase in flights to southern destinations.

At the Ottawa International Airport (YOW), the airline is adding two new routes to Phoenix (PHX) and Miami (MIA), both of which are hubs for American Airlines. In a press release, Porter said the decision to add routes to the two destinations aligns with the recently announced codeshare partnership between the two airlines.

“These two cities are destinations in themselves, while also creating seamless travel options across North America through connections to American’s broad network,” the release said.

Starting Jan. 24, Porter will fly from Ottawa to Miami three times a week. Starting Feb. 7, it will also fly to Phoenix three times a week.

Susan Margles, president and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, said in the release that she applauds Porter’s decision to continue expanding its network in Ottawa.

“Florida continues to be a popular destination for sun seekers and snowbirds from the Ottawa-Gatineau area, making the addition of service to Miami great news. The addition of Phoenix marks the first time YOW will be connected non-stop to Arizona,” she said.

Porter will also increase capacity on three Ottawa routes to sun destinations: Grand Cayman (GCM), Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR), and Puerto Vallarta (PVR).

Kevin Jackson, president of Porter Airlines, said in the release that the expansion of the winter schedule is in response to strong demand from customers for routes to sun destinations.

“We are supporting this demand with new routes and increased frequency on existing popular destinations,” he said.  “We are committed to bringing our elevated economy experience to more travellers by connecting key gateways with sun destinations at the time of year when these trips are most valued by Canadians. This growth is about offering more choices, more convenience, and the outstanding service our passengers have come to expect from Porter.”

One route that will not be flying out of Ottawa this winter is Porter’s direct flight to Las Vegas. In June, the year-round route was grounded indefinitely, and last month, the company confirmed to OBJ that it had no official plans to resume service in the coming months.

“A decision was made that YOW-LAS will not return to this year’s winter schedule, but we are considering other possibilities for Ottawa that will be determined in the coming weeks,” senior communications manager Robyn van Teunenbroek said in an email. “We’ll have more to share soon.”
