In yet another direct offering servicing the nation’s capital, Porter Airlines announced Wednesday a non-stop, round-trip route between Ottawa and Winnipeg, beginning in May.
“Consistent connectivity between Winnipeg and Ottawa-Gatineau is paramount for both business and leisure travellers,” said Mark Laroche, president and CEO of the Ottawa International Airport Authority, in a news release.
The daily flight between Ottawa International Airport (YOW) and Winnipeg Richardson International Airport (YWG) will start May 16, 2024. The route will be served by Porter’s new, larger Embraer E195-E2.

In October, Porter announced that it planned to continue to expand into Western Canada from Ottawa with daily service between YOW and Calgary International Airport (YYC) with its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.
This followed a similar announcement from Porter in July of a non-stop route between YOW and Edmonton International Airport (YEG), which began Oct. 4.
In August, Porter said it would use its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft for daily round-trip direct flights from Ottawa to Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, starting last month.
In December 2022, the Toronto-based airline launched four new direct routes from Ottawa to Boston, Newark, Quebec City and Thunder Bay.
That announcement came less than a week after Porter said it will start flying four times a day from Toronto’s Pearson International Airport to Ottawa with its Embraer E195-E2 aircraft, beginning in February 2023.
In November 2022, the airline announced it was teaming up with YOW on a $65-million plan to build two new aircraft maintenance hangars that will eventually employ hundreds of workers in the capital.
The two new hangars will total about 150,000 square feet and be used to maintain Porter’s fleet. The facilities are being built in two phases, with the first scheduled for completion by the end of 2023 and the second in the first quarter of 2024.
Earlier this week, Lynx Air said it will begin flying to Ottawa International Airport from Calgary and Vancouver on May 17, 2024.
Lynx will offer four flights a week to and from both destinations on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. The Ottawa-Vancouver service will operate as a “through flight” with a short stop in Calgary to pick up and drop off passengers.
