Video: Take a look inside MadeMill, the on-site workshop at Ottawa’s Innovation Centre

For entrepreneurs and designers with a vision, a new workshop in town aims to be the one-stop shop for turning ideas into reality.

MadeMill, the on-site workshop and digital media lab inside the Innovation Centre at Bayview Yards, opened its doors Friday. Equipped with a water-jet cutter, 3D printers and a variety of artistic and powerful tools, MadeMill is the only workshop in the city with this much design and prototype-building capability in one place, says makerspace director Jason Alford.

The shop is operated by the prototypeD team and is open to the public, although some equipment requires users to undergo training before it can be used. The team works with partners, many of which are startups and entrepreneurs in the Invest Ottawa portfolio, and charges an hourly rate to work in the shop and use certain machines. PrototypeD and its partners plan to host workshops and training seminars for the general public, while business clients can work with MadeMill staff to develop timelines, cost estimates and a path to prototyping and commercialization of a product.
