The Kanata-based Centre of Excellence for Next Generation Networks (CENGN) announced its first set of partnerships Wednesday, and two Ottawa companies have made the grade.
CENX will partner with Telus on network functions virtualization (NFV) service orchestration for assured cloud connectivity, and Corsa Technology will team with BTI Systems on software-defined networking (SDN) dynamic bandwidth on demand.
“CENGN provides a catalyst for Canadian companies to accelerate collaboration in the emerging SDN and NFV marketplace, and an excellent platform to showcase innovation,” CENX president and CEO Ed Ogonek said in a statement. “By working closely with visionary carriers, such as Telus, CENX is able to demonstrate the benefits our Cortx Service Orchestrator brings in assuring service quality in dynamic, multi-vendor, NFV networks.”

CENGN is a consortium of industry leaders dedicated to accelerating the commercialization of next-generation communications solutions. Founding members include Alcatel-Lucent, Allstream, BTI Systems, Cisco, EWA Canada, EXFO, Invest Ottawa, JDSU, Juniper, Mistral Ventures, Rogers and Telus.
“Our approach is completely industry-driven,” CENGN chief executive Ritch Dusome said in a statement. “We match our members, world-leading communication companies, with the best Canadian companies, and utilize our technology expertise and lab environment to accelerate and validate new technologies, applications and services.”
Invest Ottawa CEO Bruce Lazenby said the projects announced Wednesday are the types that were envisioned throughout the application process.
“We are proud to support this initiative that will provide technology companies significant market advantage by accelerating product introduction and increase jobs in the sector by developing talent and attracting investment into Canada,” Mr. Lazenby said in a statement.
The three other partnerships announced will see Telus working with California-based Noviflow on OpenFlow switch, smart steering for multi-protocol label switching; Juniper partnering with Burlington’s IG2 on SDN controlled energy management for data centres; and CENGN collaborating with Vancouver’s Expeto on a virtual evolved packet core demonstration.
