Ottawa’s planning committee has given a local developer the green light to build a six-storey retirement and seniors’ apartment complex on former industrial land in the city’s east end.
Huntington Properties plans to tear down a pair of existing industrial buildings at 1068 Cummings Ave., near the corner of St. Laurent Boulevard and Ogilvie Road, and replace them with three connected six-storey structures with a total of 316 residential units.
According to a site plan application filed with the city last year, the proposal calls for 186 suites in the retirement home and 130 units in the apartment complex, primarily bachelor and one-bedroom suites.

The developer says the units would offer “various levels of care and assisted living options ranging from completely independent residential units to higher levels of assisted living and daily medical care.” The buildings would be connected by a two-storey walkway.
There would be a total of 164 parking spaces for vehicles with a mix of surface-level and underground parking as well as spots for 112 bicycles.
The proposed complex also includes amenities such as a therapeutic pool, a fitness and physio studio, a hair salon, an activities room, a golf simulator, a theatre and a full-service restaurant. An outdoor communal area would offer courtyards, walking paths, outdoor dining facilities and patio space on top of the walkways.
Planning committee approved the proposal, which required a zoning amendment to allow for more residents on the site and heights taller than the 11-metre limit, last week. The plan still requires the approval of full council.
