Ottawa housing starts up 6% in February

Rowhouse starts were the engine behind a 5.7-per-cent rise in overall Ottawa housing starts in February, according to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

The number of rowhouses built in the Ottawa area rose to 160, up about 50 per cent from 107 in February 2011.

This boosted Ottawa’s starts to 314, from 297 in 2011. On a year-to-date basis, starts are up nearly 56 per cent to 798, from 513 last year.

The overall multi-family segment was only four per cent on double-digit declines in both semi-detached housing and apartment-style housing.

Apartment starts fell 51 per cent to 40 starts, from 82 last year, while semi-detached homes fell 33 per cent to six starts, from nine.

By contrast, single-home starts rose nine per cent to 108, from 99 in 2011.
