As founder and former chief executive of Canopy Growth Corp., Bruce Linton is one of the region’s best-known entrepreneurs.
But as much as his connection to Canada’s first publicly traded cannabis company has raised his profile, the Carleton University graduate’s ties to Ottawa and the surrounding area run much deeper.
In the latest instalment of OBJ’s My Ottawa Life series, Linton fills us in on the local radio personality who makes him laugh in the morning, the Ottawa tech magnate he admires most and why throwing a “weird cut” of meat in his smoker is one of his favourite indulgences.

What’s your hobby? Keeping our property trimmed of any dead trees, burning the resulting debris and generally being “productive” outside (yes, I have a burn permit).
What’s your favourite thing about Ottawa? CBC Radio One’s Ottawa Morning show because Doug (Hempstead) is hilarious; the underdog extra effort that businesses in this city show; and being in the nation’s capital.
What’s your favourite local charity or cause? In order: Big Brothers Big Sisters; The Ottawa Hospital; Queensway Carleton Hospital

What’s your favourite retailer in Ottawa? Giant Tiger. They are local and they really do a great job to keep local produce and price match.
What Ottawa personality, past or present, do you admire? Sir Terence Matthews and Jim Durrell
If you took a staycation in Ottawa, what would you do? Set up at the Westin and walk miles in every direction with a list of restaurants to explore.
What’s your favourite business event or conference in Ottawa? The annual Lumière gala at the Brookstreet Hotel. It really is “the” event that draws so many people I should see more often.
What’s your favourite meeting or convention venue? Shaw Centre, in part because it is so awesome compared to how terrible the prior structure was.
Where do you get your hair cut? Hazem’s Barber Shop in Barrhaven
What’s your favourite thing to do in Ottawa to pamper yourself? Finding some weird cut of meat and putting it on my smoker for eight hours. It means I’m staying at home and not running around doing tasks.
