Kawartha Dairy, known for its Canadian-made ice cream, is opening its first Ottawa location in the city’s west end this summer.

The 600-square-foot drive-through location at 2200 Carling Ave. is near the intersection of Carling and Fairlawn avenues and across the street from Carlingwood Shopping Centre.

“We can’t wait to bring our premium dairy products, made with fresh milk and fresh cream from Canadian farms, to our new Drive-Thru location at 2200 Carling Avenue, Ottawa. Here’s to making great family memories together,” the company said on its social media channels recently.

In an email to OBJ Monday, Kawartha Dairy said it will offer 50 flavours of ice cream, milk, cream and butter at its Ottawa location.

“This summer we’re excited to welcome customers to visit us in-store or through the convenience of our (drive-through) to pick up milk, cones and custom-made milkshakes,” the Crowe family, owners of Kawartha Dairy, said in the email.

Brent Taylor, broker and owner of Brentcom Realty Corp., which brokered the deal for the location, said the building has been on the market for about a year with many interested parties, but he felt Kawartha Dairy was the right choice.

“We felt this was the right tenant for the location and it’s a great new brand for the Ottawa region,” Taylor told OBJ.

The storefront was originally built as a Tim Hortons and then turned into a ShinyBud cannabis store in 2022 – the only drive-through cannabis experience in the city at that time.

As real estate development is bubbling in the Carlingwood area, Taylor said that the addition of this “iconic Canadian brand” is a “vote of confidence” for retail in the nation’s capital, especially when it comes to the west end.

The new Kawartha Dairy location is steps away from Carlingwood Shopping Centre, which was acquired by two real estate firms about a year ago with plans for residential development.

Kawartha Dairy operates 14 retail stores, with 13 in southern Ontario and one in Britannia Beach, B.C. It was started in 1937 by Jack and Ila Crowe in Bobcaygeon, Ont., where the company is headquartered today. Its products are also sold in grocery stores in Ontario.
