The owners of the Islam Care Centre on Lisgar Street are proposing to demolish the century-old building and replace it with new place of worship that’s more than triple its Centretown footprint, according to documents filed with the city.
The current two-and-a-half storey building, located between Bank and O’Connor streets, was originally constructed as a detached dwelling and contains just over 4,300 square feet of space.
Plans for the new structure show a four-storey building with more than 15,000 square feet of space, used for administration, prayer areas, a library, classrooms and social services, according to a documents prepared by Holzman Consultants Inc. in support of a rezoning application.

Even if the city gives the project the go-ahead, the new building will still be dwarfed by the new structures under construction around it. Mastercraft Startwood is building a 16-storey residential condominium building, dubbed SoHo Lisgar, directly to the east. The city has already approved an 18-storey apartment building across the street, according to a city report.
A rezoning of the property is required to eliminate on-site parking requirements, mandatory setbacks and to accommodate other development features.
The proposal is scheduled to go before the city’s planning committee Tuesday.
