Candidates make their pitches for city council: Mathieu Fleury, Rideau-Vanier

On Thursday, Aug. 28, OBJ issued an open invitation to all candidates in the upcoming municipal election to answer one simple question: Why should the business community vote for you?

As the responses come in, one will be published online each day, and be included in our daily email newsletter. Send your response to editor@obj.ca.

Today’s response is from Rideau-Vanier incumbent, Mathieu Fleury.

My name is Mathieu Fleury and I am seeking your support for a second term of council.

During the last four years, I have worked very closely with many members of the business community and I am dedicated to continue to work with you for four more years.

Small and medium-sized businesses are the backbone of our local economy. They are cherished members of our community who make significant contributions to our economy by creating jobs and supporting tourism.

I am very proud of the work that we have done so far: the introduction of Ottawa’s Light Rail Transit System, a concrete plan to revitalize the ByWard Market and a renewed Rideau Street, we are well on our way to make 2017 a great year for businesses in the City of Ottawa.

Since 2010, we have worked hard to foster a new positive attitude towards “people spaces,” spaces that are easily accessible where we can interact, rest and celebrate in an enjoyable setting.

It is now time to leverage the transformation happening in our city to create new public spaces that will connect our communities. These connections are important to define enjoyable interaction and place making for farmer’s markets and other on street experiences.

Moreover, I am dedicated to seeing to the revitalization of the ByWard Market in light of the Canada’s 150th anniversary celebration in 2017.

I want to see to provide new underground parking spaces, create new peoples spaces and renew the streetscaping to lead to an increase in Market activity.

I strive to provide the same great service to the business community that I have been providing to the residents of Rideau-Vanier.

With your help, my team and I can continue to support our local economy and foster our business community.
