The dust seems to be settling on WiLAN’s lengthy legal battle with one of the world’s largest tech companies.

The Ottawa-based company, which operates as a division of Quaterhill, was awarded $85.23 million Friday in a re-trial against Apple concerning patent infringements for wireless technologies. The case was decided by a jury in a United States District Court in California.

The trial followed an earlier decision in August 2018 when a jury ordered Apple to pay WiLAN $145.1 million in damages. A later appeal would uphold that court’s findings, but a re-trial was ordered specifically on the damages, resulting in last week’s verdict containing a lower financial award.

Shares of Quaterhill were up six cents to $1.89 on the Toronto Stock Exchange Friday.

Though Quarterhill announced last year that it was shifting its corporate headquarters from Ottawa to Kitchener, WiLAN retains an office of roughly 25 people in the capital.
