As more businesses across Canada begin to emerge from the COVID-19 lockdown, a Gatineau software firm is seeing growing demand for its mobile app aimed at speeding up the process of screening employees for symptoms of the novel coronavirus.

Macadamian Technologies partnered with Ottawa’s Bruyère health-care network to launch the platform earlier this spring. With measures to contain the pandemic gradually being lifted, the app is starting to gain traction in other sectors as well.

Gatineau-based Le Nordik Spa-Nature said Wednesday it will begin using Macadamian’s system to check on the health of its workers before they arrive at its three locations in Chelsea, Whitby and Winnipeg.

Employees will be asked if they are suffering from various symptoms of the coronavirus, such as sore throat, cough or fever. If they answer yes to any of the questions, they are then connected with occupational health experts to determine if they need to be quarantined.

“The well-being of our staff and guests is our top priority,” Le Nordik founder and CEO Martin Paquette said in a statement.

“As part of our return to work, we looked for a solution to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 but more so to enable our clients to feel comfortable enjoying their spa experience. The speed with which Macadamian deployed was quite exceptional given the constraints imposed by COVID-19.”

Macadamian CEO Fred Boulanger said the questionnaire can be completed in as little as 15 seconds.

“As COVID-19 business restrictions begin to lift, businesses are looking for new opportunities to further enhance their customers’ experience while preventing the spread of the disease,” he said.

The spa’s popular Chelsea location reopened June 1. For now, it is accepting reservations for massages only.

Macadamian, which makes software for health-care customers around the world, employs about 80 people at its Gatineau headquarters and another 100 at two offices in eastern Europe.
