A long-standing vision of adding a new stretch of road in Ottawa’s east end inched closer to reality this week following the completion of a key environmental study.
The extension of Vanguard Road from its current terminus at Lanthier Drive to Mer Bleue Road would help adjacent landowners develop their lands, city staff wrote in a report tabled at the transportation committee’s meeting earlier this week. A lack of road frontage has historically hindered the area’s development, the report added.

A recently completed environmental assessment identified the preferred route of the extension and generated a cost estimate of $10 million for the road extension itself and $895,000 for a realignment of the existing intersection at Mer Bleue Road.
City staff will now finalize an environmental study report for public review.
The report did not give any indication of the construction timeline.
