An iconic Ottawa toy and games retailer is packing it in after more than four decades in business.
Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s announced via a Facebook post Wednesday that it would shutter its Ottawa locations in March. The Ottawa brand started store-closing sales at its Westboro location last week, but confirmed Wednesday that its flagship store in the Glebe would close as well.
The retailer, which sold toys, board games and colourful knick-knacks, launched back in 1977 and saw three generations of family members run the business over the years. The chain expanded across Ottawa and even featured a location in the Rideau Centre for a time.

Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s staff asked customers to return to the 809 Bank St. store to leave their memories in the coming weeks. The Facebook post ended fittingly with a Dr. Seuss quote asking patrons not to cry because it’s over, but to smile because it happened.
Nonetheless, many customers couldn’t hold back and took to social media to express their fond farewells to the Ottawa retailers.
I walked down to #WestboroVillage to say goodbye to @tiggysottawa this morning. The neighbourhood won’t be the same without them.

Really bummed to find out Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s is closing all of their locations. That is our family’s favourite store, especially the Glebe location. Thanks for all the great toys, games and memories! #Ottawa

My favourite toy store is closing down so I brought the staff cupcakes and a letter to thank them for being so wonderful and supportive to me over the years. Thank you Mrs. Tiggy Winkle’s. You brought magic to my childhood and this whole neighbourhood. I’ll never forget you. pic.twitter.com/5g6TyY5j9a
