Ottawa students and researchers now have access to another development centre for prototyping new products through the latest tech.
Collège La Cité officially unveiled its new prototyping centre on Tuesday. The centre’s full, lengthy title is La Cité’s UniverSTEM Prototyping Centre – Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est. La Cité is partnering with the local French-language school board to open the lab, which will also be accessible to its high school students.
The students, researchers and their partner businesses using the centre will have laser cutters, 3D printers, oscilloscopes, nanocomputers and more at their disposal. Each product developed at the lab will be designed to meet a need at the college, school board or one of their partners.

Lynn Casimiro, La Cité’s vice-president of academic and student success, said in a statement that the prototyping centre is meant to “attract bright minds and stimulate innovation.”
The UniverSTEM Prototyping Centre joins a growing crop of similar makerspaces throughout Ottawa, including MadeMill at Bayview Yards, Makerspace North and facilities at the University of Ottawa’s STEM building.
