Trained software developers in Ottawa who have fallen behind on recent advances in the field will soon be able to get back up to speed with a helping hand from Shopify.
The e-commerce giant has opened applications for its Welcome Back program, which looks to bridge devs who took time off from the field back into a software career. The paid, three-month program, starting in October, is open to anyone in Ottawa who has worked at least three years in software but has taken two or more years off from the field.
Shopify’s posting emphasizes that it’s okay to be “rusty” in coding languages, as long as you demonstrate a natural curiosity. The program will pair each participant with a Shopify mentor and run them through a crash course for Ruby on Rails.

Shopify’s effort to recruit and train lapsed software engineers comes as local tech companies attempt to attract skilled workers in what many report to be a tight talent market. Shopify has previously said that it looks to open its talent pipeline as wide as possible to recruit candidates from all walks of life.
Applications for the Welcome Back program are open now until Sept. 13.
