The City of Ottawa announced Wednesday the Flora Footbridge over the Rideau Canal on will officially open this weekend, a few months ahead of schedule.

The pedestrian and cyclist bridge, spanning 123 metres, starts near the end of Fifth Avenue on the western side of the canal to Clegg Street across the water. Studies and public consultations launched back in 2011 showed demand for a new pedestrian crossing in the area.

Work on the project, constructed by Pomerleau and WSP, began in the fall of 2017. The federal government chipped in $10.5 million and the province contributed $5 million towards the bridge’s $21-million total budget.
