A record dumping of snow couldn’t keep planes on the ground in January as the Ottawa airport saw a slight increase in overall passenger volume driven by international traffic.
Some 403,000 travellers passed through the local airport last month compared with roughly 401,900 in January last year, according to the Ottawa International Airport Authority’s monthly statistics.
The Ottawa airport saw a 6,000-passenger decline in domestic traffic volume and a slight dip in U.S. travel, but a year-over-year increase of nearly 7,000 international travellers brought the total traffic volume up to 63,898 in that segment. The first month of the year is often a strong one for international travel at the Ottawa airport, but 2019 marks the most January traffic in more than three years.
