Ross Meredith, general manager of The Westin Ottawa and Delta Ottawa City Centre, is retiring.
The Westin Ottawa announced Tuesday that Meredith will step away after more than a decade on Nov. 1.
“When I came here 13 years ago, I certainly wasn't thinking I'd be here for 13 years,” Meredith told OBJ on Tuesday. “Like many, you do your three or four years and you move on to the next opportunity. But this city kept me engaged, kept me excited."
Meredith joined the Westin brand in 2007, spending three years as general manager of The Westin Calgary. In 2011, he moved to California to take on the same role at The Westin Mission Hills Resort in Rancho Mirage.
He joined the Ottawa hotel as general manager in 2014 and gained a reputation as one of the city’s top hotel executives.
In October 2020, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, he took on a dual role as GM at the Delta Ottawa City Centre to save costs and drive business to both properties.
With his retirement, Meredith said the role will once again be split, with the new GMs for each hotel set to be announced shortly.
"It's an opportunity to pass the torch to other leaders, to take it from where I've left off and take it farther,” he said. “Both (hotels) are completing major guest room renovations, so it's an exciting time to leave. They're set up for success."
As he looks back on his career, Meredith said he’s proud of his accomplishments, most of all the support and mentorship he was able to provide and watching his colleagues succeed.
“Watching people grow and their success has been my most fond memory of my career for the last 30 years,” he said. “That will be the piece that will be the hardest to leave — not being a part of celebrating their success. But it's also one of the easiest things to leave, because I feel so proud about what they've accomplished.”
Both properties are managed by Marriott International, the world’s largest hotel chain. They are two of the four largest hotels in the city, with a combined total of 902 guest rooms, 47 meeting rooms and 73,000 square feet of meeting space.
