City officials say “a minor construction incident” temporarily trapped three workers late Thursday afternoon after some reinforcing steel came loose in Ottawa’s light-rail tunnel near the University of Ottawa.
John Manconi, the city’s general manager of transportation services, said in a statement that no part of the tunnel itself collapsed.
He said workers were applying concrete to the side wall of the tunnel when some steel fell and came to a rest on the workers’ lift, which required them to seek assistance to lower it safely.

Ottawa paramedics spokeswoman Manon Lavergne said Thursday one worker suffered a minor hand injury.
Lavergne says the injured worker was taken to hospital for treatment. The other two were not injured.
Ottawa city Coun. Mathieu Fleury said at the scene on Waller Street, near the University of Ottawa, that the majority of workers escaped and the three were trapped in a “safe zone.”
The Ontario Ministry of Labour is investigating the incident.
