The inspiration: “Our gift of $1 million to support the new BGC Ottawa clubhouse is a stone’s throw from our community at Hazelview. So, the donation just made sense. With over 1,850 Hazelview units, supporting the youth in Heron Gate and continuing our history of partnering with BGCO is a positive step,” says Colleen Krempulec, senior vice-president of brand marketing and corporate social responsibility at Hazelview Properties.
The BGC Ottawa team is celebrating a donation of $1 million from Hazelview Properties in support of programs at the Taggart Parkes Family Clubhouse in south Ottawa.
Hazelview develops and manages real estate across Canada, including in the Heron Gate community. The gift from the developer is part of an investment in the south-end communities.
The 15,000 square foot clubhouse has been in operation for seven months. The goal is to support underserved children and youth in Heron Gate and Heatherington. On average, 150 children and youth attend free programs each day.
“Children and youth have been waiting close to 30 years for a place like this — just for them,” says Adam Joiner, CEO of BGC Ottawa.
“Hazelview’s ongoing support has allowed us to offer transportation of children and youth from nearby neighbourhoods to the club. With this transformational support, we are also able to fund a leadership program at the Taggart Parkes Family Clubhouse that will help us invest in the next generation of young leaders,” adds Joiner.
For almost 100 years, BGC Ottawa has provided free programs and services to almost 5,000 young people in 19 neighbourhoods, offering supportive places where kids and teens can experience new opportunities, participate in activities and develop life skills.
The club is focused on a number of initiatives, including anti-racism, reconciliation, LGBTQ2S+, food security, scholarships and job readiness. BGC Ottawa has an ambitious plan to double its impact and members by 2024.
“We are in the process of developing more new housing in the area. Publicly committing to an investment into youth and supporting the people who call Herongate home is all about investing into the people,” says Krempulec.
