The number of construction permits issued in December was the lowest for the month since 2008, but helped bring overall activity in the sector in 2012 to its highest level in at least four years, according to municipal records.
With 387 construction permits issued for a total value of $133.3 million last month, 2012’s year-end total permit value was $2.05 billion, a 13 per cent increase from 2011’s total of $1.8 billion.
Helping to tip the scales was a permit valued at $48.3 million for PCL Constructors Canada Inc. to build the superstructure of a five-storey parking garage at Bayshore Shopping Centre. The city also issued a second permit, valued at $9.65 million, for PCL to build a three-storey addition onto the east end of the mall.
