United Airlines is set to cancel its service between Ottawa and Newark next year, just as the air carrier is expected to resume its direct connections between YOW and Chicago.
Both the Ottawa International Airport Authority and a United spokesperson confirmed to OBJ Monday that the airline would end its twice-daily flights between Ottawa and Newark (EWR) effective March 5, 2020. The route will still be served by Air Canada Express flights, which operate three times daily on weekdays, once on Saturdays and twice on Sundays.
The United spokesperson said the decision to cancel its Newark service came after a review of both business and leisure demand for the route.

The end of United’s YOW-EWR service will come as the airline resumes its direct flights between Ottawa and Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport (ORD). United said earlier this year it was temporarily suspending service between the two airports, but the spokesperson confirmed the three-times-daily service will return next March.
The Ottawa airport has seen declining traffic to and from the U.S. in the months since the YOW-ORD suspension went into effect on June 6. Ottawa International Airport Authority CEO Mark Laroche told OBJ earlier this year he expects the U.S. to be the local travel hub’s biggest driver of growth.
United will also continue to operate its three daily flights between Ottawa and Washington Dulles.
