The National Capital Commission moved a step closer towards redeveloping LeBreton Flats on Tuesday as it awarded millions of dollars worth of remediation contracts to a pair of local firms.
The board of directors of the federal Crown corporation voted to award a $4.9-million soil remediation contract to Milestone Environmental Contracting and R.W. Tomlinson. The two companies’ joint bid was the lowest of five submitted, which NCC staff said averaged approximately $7.2 million.
The contract calls for the land, located just south of Wellington Street and the nearby War Museum, to be remediated by December 2013. The NCC has designated those lands for residential and commercial developments.

Ottawa homebuilder Claridge Homes has been developing condominiums in the area for the past decade. The land, which last century the federal government expropriated with the aim of developing government buildings, previously sat unused for 40 years.
Claridge is preparing to begin construction for the third phase of developments in the area. It previously built two 13-storey towers on the site, each of which contain 173 units.
The NCC hopes LeBreton Flats will eventually have office space as well, according to information on its website.
