The switch has officially been flipped on 5G in Ottawa as Rogers Communications announced Wednesday it has rolled out its version of the next-generation network in the capital.
Ottawa, Toronto, Vancouver and Montreal are the first launch sites for the telecom’s 5G network.
The technology is set to provide more flexible bandwidth and lower-latency connections even in more remote and rural areas of Canada. The next-gen network is also a precursor to technologies such as autonomous vehicles and smart city applications, which rely on split-second connection times.

Rogers said in a statement that it’s rolling out the network now in preparation for the release of 5G-compatible devices set to come on the market later this year.
“5G is the biggest technological evolution since the launch of wireless in Canada. We are making the right investments, building the right partnerships and deploying the right technology to bring Canadians the very best of 5G,” said Rogers president Joe Natale in a statement.
Rogers has partnered with network equipment supplier Ericsson on 5G testing in Ottawa for the past two years. The two companies have also previously piloted a smart city water solution in the nation’s capital.
