November saw another decline in traveller traffic for the Ottawa airport, which will need a strong holiday season to boost its annual passenger volumes above 2018 figures.
Some 380,684 travellers passed through the Ottawa airport in November, down from 391,751 passengers a year earlier. The airport saw a decline in travellers flying both across Canada and across the border, as domestic traffic dropped two per cent (roughly 7,000 total passengers) and U.S. traffic fell 13 per cent (another 7,000 passengers).
YOW’s silver lining was in the international segment, which saw some 22,572 passengers travel to or from Ottawa last month, as compared to 19,818 a year ago.

Heading into the busy holiday season, year-to-date passenger volumes at the Ottawa airport were on par with figures over the first 11 months of 2018. Some 4,687,167 people have travelled through YOW so far in 2019, just edging out the 4,686,510 from the same period in 2018.
Last year marked the first time the Ottawa airport surpassed five million annual passengers, with some 5.1 million people passing through the local travel hub.
While the yet-to-be-reported December is always a relatively strong month with holiday travel demands, if the airport aims to improve its year-over-year traffic figures, it will need a big boost to offset the downward trend it has seen in passenger volumes since the middle of 2019.
