Local business leader Roger Greenberg will be awarded a doctor of laws, honoris causa, by Carleton University next week in recognition of his contributions to the local philanthropic sector, including spearheading fundraising campaigns for numerous organizations in the health and education spheres.
“Roger Greenberg is a remarkable business and community leader,” said Carleton’s president and vice-chancellor, Benoit-Antoine Bacon. “We are pleased and proud to honour Roger at this historic Carleton convocation in recognition of all the ways that he and his family continue to give back to our community and our city.”
Greenberg is currently executive chairman of the board of The Minto Group and Minto Apartment REIT and executive chairman and managing partner at Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group. He sits on the board of governors of the Canadian Football League and the Ontario Hockey League and was one of five members of Ottawa’s business community leading the Lansdowne Transformation Plan.

In 1985, Greenberg joined Minto on a full-time basis and became its CEO in 1991. He has since divided his time and passion between overseeing operations of Minto and lending his expertise to philanthropic causes in the community. He held the CEO role until October 2013.
“I am a strong believer in four pillars of support for growing a successful community — education, health, sports and arts — and so that’s where I’ve spent most of my philanthropic career, trying to help build up each of those parts, in various ways, over the years,” Greenberg told OBJ this week.
The conferring of this honorary degree will be a special moment for Greenberg; one that had been delayed until Carleton University was able to return to in-person convocation.
Greenberg obtained his bachelor of commerce at the University of Toronto and a law degree at Osgoode Hall law school in 1980.
Throughout his career, Greenberg has received many distinguished awards and honours, including becoming a Member of the Order of Canada, the Federation of Rental-housing Providers of Ontario Lifetime Achievement Award, the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal, the Gilbert Greenberg Distinguished Service Award by the Ottawa Jewish Community, the Ottawa Business Journal’s CEO of the Year in 2004, and United Way Community Builder award in 2001. He is the former Honourary Colonel of the 30th Field Artillery Regiment, nicknamed the “Bytown Gunners.”
