After winning a major training contract earlier this month, Calian Group has landed a multi-year deal to work with Canadian aerospace firm MDA and the Canadian Space Agency on their continuing satellite missions.
The three-year contract is valued at about $16 million, with options for an additional two years.
The deal will see Kanata-based Calian’s engineers and technicians work from the CSA’s mission control centre in St. Hubert, Que. to help engineer and maintain the space agency’s current satellite fleet and help prepare for future missions.

Calian has provided its satellite engineering expertise to the CSA since 1994 and has partnered with MDA since 2007.
“It is exciting to see us continue our long-standing relationship with MDA,” Patrick Thera, president of Calian’s advanced technologies division, said in a statement. “Calian is rapidly becoming the pre-eminent supplier of all things satellite ground systems-related.”
Calian’s contract with MDA comes as it continues to broaden its reach in the satellite technology sector.
The firm recently acquired antenna systems provider InterTronic, makers of technology used in deep-space radar. In addition, Calian CEO Kevin Ford recently pointed to the rapid development of low-Earth-orbit satellites such as Telsat’s planned constellation as potential sources of other new partnerships for the company.
It’s the second major deal for Calian in the past few weeks. In early March, the company was awarded a five-year contract worth up to $32.5 million to help professors at Kingston’s Royal Military College conduct R&D in engineering, science, social science and the humanities.
