The owner of the mixed-use development at Metcalfe and Lisgar streets has applied to build a new cafe canopy in front of a forthcoming Farm Boy grocery store.

Claridge Homes’ application for a minor variance to build the canopy area will head to the committee of adjustment on Jan. 22. The proposal requires a reduced setback of 0.42 metres and an increase height limit of 5.2 metres for the accessory structure.

The site, which sits at the base of Claridge’s Tribeca high-rise development, has been undergoing renovations since Farm Boy’s parent company, Empire Co. Ltd., announced it would replace the existing 28,000-square-foot Sobeys Urban Fresh supermarket with the Ottawa-based brand last year.

The plaza in front of the grocery store previously featured metal tables and seats in an open-air setting; the new vision will see wood-based features, plants and covered seating.

Farm Boy announced in December that the Metcalfe location is set to open this spring. Elsewhere in the city, Farm Boy is relocating its Train Yards location to 830 Belfast Rd. The grocer plans to open eight new locations across Ontario in the coming year.
