A key linkage between Ottawa and Gatineau will remain closed until August for planned construction after flood waters forced its closure two weeks ago.

Public Services and Procurement Canada announced Tuesday that the Union Bridge on the Chaudière Crossing, which closed in late April due to the danger of rising flood waters in the Ottawa River, will remain closed to private, commercial and truck traffic until construction work along the Booth Street-Rue Eddy corridor is complete.

Private traffic will continue to be diverted to the nearby Portage Bridge while commercial transport and trucks are being deferred farther downriver to the Macdonald-Cartier Bridge.

Once flood waters recede and the bridge is inspected and deemed safe, pedestrians, cyclists and public transit will be permitted to cross the river at Union Bridge again.
