Ottawa’s Algonquin College announced a new scholarship this week aimed at plugging a talent gap in the skilled trades industry.
A donation from The W. Garfield Weston Foundation will support more than 150 students over the next four years to a total value of $640,000. The awards will be divided between Algonquin’s apprentices and post-secondary students.
A release says the Weston Family Scholarship for Skilled Trades will go to students in the transportation, manufacturing and construction sectors, which it says are currently undergoing labour shortages.

The W. Garfield Weston Foundation began in the 1950s, started by the same Weston family known in Canada for George Weston Ltd. and its food processing and distribution subsidiaries as well as grocery chains such as Loblaws.
