Employees at Shopify, Pythian and Assent Compliance are the most well-connected in Ottawa according to a newly released list from a Toronto startup focused on the power of relationships.
Those three firms topped the list of the 25 most networked companies in the city, which also featured well-known players such as Klipfolio, Fusebill, L-Spark and FarmLead. Perhaps unsurprisingly, many of the firms on the list are located in the downtown core – a convenient spot for all-hour meetings.
The rankings were released this week by Toronto’s Nudge.ai, which develops a customer-relationship management plug-in that focuses on the relationship part of CRMs.

The solution gives firms a holistic picture of its sales team’s relationships and measures how strong they are through metadata such as email communication, meetings and other regular interactions. It can also cross check the strength of these relationships with the firm’s anticipated sales pipeline, and can send an alert if a relationship needs attention or if a salesperson isn’t yet connected with a decision maker.
Over the past three years, Nudge has built up a wider view of networks through its proprietary data, giving the startup a rough sketch of connections throughout a community.
“We’re able to say this company is a well-connected company because, in aggregate, the folks in this company tend to have a lot of relationships to the outside world,” says Nudge.ai’s chief technical officer and cofounder Steve Woods.
Nudge has different tiers of offerings depending on the size of the enterprise or whether just a small team wants to deploy the solution. The firm counts employees at Microsoft and Shopify among its users.
Nudge has crafted similar lists for Toronto and Waterloo’s startup communities. Woods says the company is hoping to draw attention to the value of relationships: something he says everyone intuitively knows are important, but are often “amorphous” and difficult to measure.
