Though the original plan in 2014 called for 120 employees in five years, Swedish design house Syntronic has just passed a headcount of 200 in Ottawa with plans and provincial funding to grow further in a new location.

Syntronic has moved its Kanata R&D outpost to 340 Terry Fox Dr., right next to Marshes Golf Club. The firm now has 24,000 square feet at that location and an additional 4,000 square feet back in its old abode at 555 Legget Dr.

Syntronic Canada’s business development manager Jimmy Kelland said in an email that the move will allow the firm to expand its test labs and continue its growth in Ottawa.

Syntronic held an official opening for the new offices on Friday morning. On hand was Ottawa West-Nepean MPP and provincial minister of infrastructure Bob Chiarelli, who announced that Syntronic would receive support from the Eastern Ontario Development Fund to purchase new equipment and improve its in-house capabilities.

The firm will augment roughly $6.2 million of its own spending with $600,000 from the province, creating 45 new jobs in Ottawa over five years.

Also receiving money from this fund locally are Lockheed Martin Canada, IDS North America and Whitewater Brewing Company.

Invest Ottawa helped the firm land in Ottawa back in 2014. The regional economic development agency helped connect Syntronic Canada president Hans Molin to the talent and real estate it needed to expand, and also assisted his family in settling into capital life.
