OC Transpo was served a $25,000 fine by the Canadian Transportation Agency for failing to call out stops on multiple routes, according to a memo sent to city staff on Tuesday.
Two CTA employees took 26 trips on Ottawa buses in November and found that the automated callout system failed to announce stops in four instances. The issues were either with the system itself, its timing or the bus’s onboard speakers.
Introduced in 2010, the primary goal of the next-stop announcement system is to improve accessibility for riders, according to OC Transpo’s website. It uses a GPS tracker to identify where a bus is in regards to its route.

OC Transpo received the penalty notice in December. In the memo, transit boss John Manconi says that fine has been paid and the agency increased maintenance inspections and random spot checks of the system in use.
