The surge in new home construction showed no signs of slowing last month as Ottawa homebuilders continued to launch new projects at an accelerated pace, according to data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp.

Developers launched 463 housing starts in April, the CMHC said this week. That’s up 53 per cent from 302 starts in April 2016.

So far this year, homebuilders have started work on 1,817 new properties, up by two-thirds over the 1,095 starts during the same period a year earlier.

Nationally, CMHC said the annual pace of new housing starts fell 15 per cent last month compared with March.

The move lower came as the pace of multi-unit urban starts fell 16.7 per cent and single-detached urban starts dropped 12.1 per cent.
