Two students each from Carleton University and the University of Ottawa are among 18 selected to take part in Huawei’s ‘Seeds for the Future’ journey to China.
Étienne Dumont and Kaneez-Saba Shaik from the University of Ottawa and Carleton’s Kathleen Rozman and Christian Shurepa leave Saturday on the two-week professional and cultural trip.
The program was launched to help develop information and communications technology talent in Canada, promote a greater understanding of the telecommunications sector and encourage participation in the ICT international community, Huawei said in a release issued Friday.

Huawei Canada president Sean Yang said the students “promise to be key players in the future of Canada’s ICT sector.”
“It is our hope this international experience will expose them to a global, cross-cultural business environment and help prepare these students for a bright future in technology,” he said.
In addition to cultural training, visits to historical sites and an introduction to the language, the students will get a one-week placement at Huawei headquarters in Shenzhen. There, the students will learn from Huawei engineers and business leaders, visit company laboratories and see live technology demonstrations.
The program is a continuation of Huawei’s collaborative work with universities across Canada. To date, the company has spent $3 million in advanced communications research projects with Canadian universities.
