Local translation firm ready for global opportunities

A 2008 OBJ Forty Under 40 recipient is in Orlando this week as part of an all-woman Canadian trade mission she says has the potential open “a lot of doors” for her translation company.

Earlier this year, Huiping Zhang’s firm wintranslation was awarded “Certified Women’s Business Enterprise” status through WEConnect International, an organization that helps businesses with majority female ownership and operation succeed in global value chains.

The trade mission has taken Ms. Zhang to the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council (WBENC) National Conference and Business Fair, where around 300 exhibitors are on display for the roughly 3,500 delegates taking part.

“We export a huge portion of our services into the United States,” she told OBJ from the conference floor. “It’s actually our end client in the U.S. who asked us to become certified so they can allocate what they’ve done with us under diversity spending.”

Ms. Zhang said her firm acquired a new Fortune 100 client almost immediately after getting the certification in January and expects this conference to lead to more business.

“All of the corporate members of WeConnect are large global enterprises, and they all have a communication aspect that’s global,” she said. “Whether it’s to translate their product manual or their website or whether they are training international staffing or other communication aspects.”

Most of wintranslation’s work for Canadian clients involves translating between English and French, but the conference is opening Ms. Zhang’s eyes to a new whole range of opportunities, she said.

“The world is quite large. You just have to get out of Canada,” she said.
