Downtown Pembroke celebrates 50 years of business and community

The Pembroke Business Improvement Area (PBIA) is marking a major milestone in 2026, celebrating 50 years of supporting and championing businesses in the heart of downtown Pembroke. This anniversary is more than a reflection on longevity, it highlights the ongoing role of the downtown core as a hub for economic growth, entrepreneurship, and community connection.

Over the past five decades, the Pembroke Business Improvement Area has played a critical role in shaping the identity and vibrancy of downtown Pembroke. From small, family-run shops to evolving retail and service experiences, the downtown has remained a central gathering place for residents and visitors alike.

A year of celebration and storytelling

To mark this milestone, PBIA will host a full year of celebrations, events, and storytelling initiatives that showcase the people, places, and moments that have defined downtown Pembroke over the years. These efforts aim to both honour the past and highlight the continued evolution of the local business community.

The celebrations will officially kick off on May 23 with a Downtown “Eras Party” running from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Spanning five blocks, the event will transform the downtown into an immersive, decade-by-decade experience under the theme: “five blocks, five decades, one big party.”

Visitors will be invited to walk through time as each block represents a different era, complete with storefronts decorated in period-inspired décor and staff dressed to match the styles of the decade. The event is designed to create an engaging and nostalgic atmosphere while remaining accessible and enjoyable for all ages.

Interactive activations will bring each decade to life, including a 1970s-themed roller rink, an ’80s pop-up arcade, and modern, social media-inspired challenges that encourage participation and connection. The programming reflects a balance of nostalgia and innovation, aligning with the spirit of both long-standing businesses and new entrepreneurs in the downtown core.

Honouring the past while looking ahead

Later in the year, the PBIA will host a members’ gala to recognize both past and present businesses that have contributed to the success and resilience of downtown Pembroke. This event will celebrate the entrepreneurs, community leaders, and local champions who have helped shape the area over the past 50 years.

Throughout 2026, the PBIA will also share stories that highlight key milestones, local businesses, and the individuals behind them. These stories will serve as a reminder of the strength and adaptability of the downtown business community, while also inspiring continued growth and investment.

As downtown Pembroke continues to evolve, this 50th anniversary serves as a meaningful moment to reflect on its history while building momentum for the future. The PBIA’s commitment to supporting local businesses remains as strong as ever, ensuring that the downtown core continues to thrive for generations to come.
