Local non-profit leader Rachael Wilson, perhaps best known for leading the Ottawa Food Bank through the pandemic years, will take on the role of president and CEO of United Way East Ontario beginning in the new year.

Wilson’s career spans 25 years in the non-profit sector, including roles at The Ottawa Hospital Foundation, National Arts Centre and the Ottawa Regional Cancer Foundation. In 2016, she joined the Ottawa Food Bank as director of communications and development and in 2020 took on the role of CEO.

While at the helm of the food bank, Wilson also helped to lead the city-wide poverty reduction strategy in partnership with the City of Ottawa, United Way East Ontario and collaborators across housing, employment, social services and food systems.

In a news release Wednesday, Wilson said she is honoured to be joining United Way East Ontarioat a time when our communities are counting on us to uncover and address the systemic challenges affecting everyday life.

“Whether it’s housing, financial stability, mental wellbeing, or community-building, United Way offers hope for a future where everyone can reach their full potential,” she said. “I am excited to lead this organization as we work to find long-term solutions to these critical issues and more.”

Thom Donnelly, chair of the United Way East Ontario board of directors, said in the release that Wilson’s experience and award-winning leadership will be an asset.

“Most importantly, she is someone who has driven meaningful impact in our communities — showing strong leadership on the critical issues facing our region,” said Donnelly. “Rachael cares deeply about improving lives by tackling the toughest of problems at the root and she brings the credibility and experience to make it happen.”

The president and CEO role has been held on an interim basis by Dennise Taylor-Gilhen since 2024. Taylor-Gilhen, who previously served as vice-president of community impact, will transition into an advisory role.

Wilson’s appointment will begin Jan. 12, 2026.
