Do you remember the mentor in your life who helped shape your career?
In the business world, success often depends on the connections we build, fuelled by guidance and support from experienced professionals who invest time and knowledge in others. This spirit of mentorship is at the heart of the Building Futures program, an initiative by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Ottawa (BBBSO) which calls upon local businesses to invest in building brighter futures for youth in Ottawa.
Former “Big Brother” and Senior Vice President of eQ Homes, Josh Kardish, understands first-hand the importance and impact of mentorship. “Mentorship is about opening doors,” says Josh. “It’s about showing people what’s possible and helping them realize that someone believes in their potential. This is a critical part of all of our stories as professionals and business people, and it’s a narrative we owe to young people.” eQ Homes has been a dedicated supporter of BBBSO through events such as the eQ Homes Big Tee Off which, this year, has become the most successful fundraiser in the organization’s history.
As a respected leader in Ottawa’s business community, Josh’s own career has been shaped by mentors who offered guidance and support at crucial moments. “I wouldn’t be where I am today without the advice, feedback, and encouragement from the mentors in my life,” Josh reflects. Each one played a vital role in his personal and professional development and Josh learned that mentorship isn’t just about teaching skills, but about empowering people to succeed.
eQ Homes as a whole believes that mentorship is a cornerstone of success, not just for individuals but for entire industries. “The home building sector, and the trades in general, rely on mentorship,” Josh explains. “Most people learn about career opportunities from those already in the field, and the majority of skills are developed through hands-on guidance.”
Building Futures
The Building Futures program calls upon those who share a belief in the importance of mentorship to invest in the future of our youth and community. BBBSO mentorship programs work by connecting youth with mentors who can provide guidance and a listening ear. These relationships encourage personal growth and inspire confidence for the mentee. This is an opportunity for businesses across Ottawa to give back to the community in a meaningful way. By participating, companies can play a crucial role in nurturing the next generation of leaders, innovators, and professionals.
BBBSO invites Ottawa businesses to get involved through the Building Futures program. It takes about $1000 per year to support a youth’s mentorship match, and we have flexible investment and recognition opportunities for your business starting here. With your support, you will be making a genuine impact on youth growing up in Ottawa – something you and your consumers can feel great about.
