Algonquin College has received a $2-million gift from The Joyce Family Foundation, establishing an endowment to support students facing financial barriers.
The donation is the largest single contribution to Algonquin College to date.
The Joyce Family Foundation Bursary will support students at the Ottawa, Perth and Pembroke campuses by addressing financial need and “supporting students who have demonstrated resilience in overcoming challenges,” the college said in a news release.

The college officially announced the new bursary during its AC Philanthropy Champions event at the Ottawa campus Monday.
“The Joyce Family Foundation is deeply committed to fostering educational opportunities for those who face barriers to accessing higher education. Our bursaries are designed with the understanding that financial need should not dictate one’s ability to achieve academic and personal success,” said Ed Lumley, chair of foundation, in the release.
“This unprecedented contribution from The Joyce Family Foundation exemplifies the profound impact that generosity and vision can have on our community,” said Claude Brulé, president and CEO of Algonquin College.
Each of the selected students will receive a renewable bursary of $5,000 for the duration of their program.
Algonquin College is the largest polytechnic institute in Eastern Ontario, with campuses in Ottawa, Perth, Pembroke and AC Online.
The Joyce Family Foundation endows bursaries based primarily on financial need and awards students enrolled in full-time studies at a recognized college or university in Canada. The purpose of the bursaries is to increase the participation of disadvantaged or at-risk youth who face obstacles and barriers to a post-secondary education.
